Set up in 2001, the Dot NAME universal TLD is the only one meant for personal websites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other labels people are popular by. At the beginning, only 3rd-level registrations were possible, so if you planned to book john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already purchased third-level domain names remained active.
